How to Overcome the Challenges of Dyslexia

Dyslexia

People often ask about how #PhotoReading can help with #Dyslexia or indeed whether or not the System will still work for them.

In terms of the PhotoReading Steps and Whole Mind System it is one of the first things we cover.

I often have people telephone me before booking the Workshop to let me know they have it. My response is always: “That’s nice” or words to that effect.

Why? Because in the 16 years I have been teaching PhotoReading I never had one person even remember to notice their dyslexia during the Workshop, and the rate at which they forget has increased exponentially since I introduced the Bonus #Huna Sessions into the mix.

As one previous attendee Ashling put it:

“I completed the Photo Reading course and found it brilliant. Due to my dyslexia I had a painfully slow reading speed, do it, will make such a difference to you.”

How Do You Overcome the Challenges of Dyslexia?

A big part of it centres around the #TangerineTechnique because that is about focusing the mind.  Those with dyslexia tend to have what you call a ‘roving point of attention’ which means their mind and attention can be jumping around and scattering things.

We start by creating a ‘fixed point of focus and awareness’ using the Tangerine Technique.

There’s that magical moment where attendees and students have what I call the Lightbulb or Aha Moment where it all just clicks and falls into place and they enter a new state of being and find ways to use their skills.  And if you have followed me for a while you will know that this is small fry as I’ve even had clients reverse long standing brain damage after just 2 days of PhotoReading with me.  (There is a whole Blog on the reversing brain damage story.  You’ll find it in my Accelerated Learning Category).

The Power of Limiting Beliefs and Expectations

There is also often a more subtle piece around beliefs and expectations; if you missed my #FacebookLive about the Bandura Curve you can watch it here: https://www.facebook.com/acceleratedlearningmadeeasy/videos/1727893963932286/

It might seem like a small thing however it plays a massive role if limiting beliefs have taken hold and become the norm.

The Gift of Dyslexia
The Gift of Dyslexia

The Gift of Dyslexia & Dyspraxia

The origins of the Tangerine Technique stem from the work or Ron Davis and his book entitled the Gift of Dyslexia.

We see dramatic results and shifts in just 2.5 days, and in a matter of just hours with private one-to-one PhotoReading Coaching Sessions.  Back in the early days I had a teenage client who had been thrown out of private school because he wasn’t making the grades.  He got in by virtue of his academically smart old brother however he had by dyslexia and dyspraxia.

We worked together for about an hour and half plus I stayed for dinner to do some final mind melding!  He had miraculous results during the Session and went on to get a B in his History exam.  It was the subject he struggled with most given the names, dates, places, and multitude of things to be sorted out in the mind and remembered. As his mum reported back it also gave him the confidence to get a Saturday job and a girlfriend.  He was around 14 when I worked with him.  He celebrated his 21st birthday a couple of years ago and is still doing amazingly well.

Where to Begin

I am currently filming a Series of ‘PhotoReading A-Z’ Facebook live videos so letter ‘T’ will be the Tangerine techniques.  You can follow the series here: https://www.facebook.com/acceleratedlearningmadeeasy/  As a starting point you might want to think about:

  1. Your personal Learning Style.  If you are trying to work against that in order to be ‘more academic’ it could be sabotaging your progress.  One of the things we explore at both the PhotoReading Workshop and the Online DVD is Learning Styles.  I did what I call a ‘quick and dirty’ Quiz here to give you a very basic idea: https://app.brandquiz.io/tranceformationstm/what-type-of-learner-are-you
  2. The Multiple Intelligences.  I also teach both experientially and theoretically about the Multiple Intelligences.  The more of them you can bring into your learning and life experiences, the more powerful it will be.
  3. Your Beliefs.  Explore what you believe about your abilities are a reader, learner, studier, memory, assimilator of information, etc.  If those beliefs don’t support you; common things include statements such as: “I’m a slow reader.”  “I’ve got a bad memory.”  “It’s hard to study.”  “My job is difficult because it takes a long time to remember things.”  “I hate interviews because I get confused or forget what to say.”  “I never . . . . .” “I can’t . . . . “  I could go on however I think you get my gist.

As one of my PhotoReading Online DVD clients Sieta said:

“Hi Marilyn, I’ve just finished the third DVD and OMG it is beyond AMAZING!!!! I truly feel like I am with you all taking part, doing the exercises as I go along…… At time when I go through the PhotoReading process I feel like I am taking nothing in but then certain words pop into my head. You are a fantastic coach and making it fun as we learn it too. Thank you for this. I have said many a time, I wish there was a way of reading where I could take in what I need then write in my own words and get excellent marks, then out of the blue I saw your PhotoReading course come up. I want meant to do this!!!!! xxxx”

And having watched the 4-Part DVD Series and re-taken her failed Counselling exams she said:

“Hi Marilyn, here it goes! I have wanted to do the Photoreading course for ages but due to finances, I couldn’t, so I decided to purchase the on-line version, so pleased I did. Marilyn is a fantastic coach and I felt like I was there in the room with everyone else. I did the exercises and felt completely in-tune with the others, I didn’t pass my exam, the first time round but with doing to exercises from the DVD which I found invaluable. When it came to revising I followed the mind-mapping exercise, I gained so much knowledge and information. When it came to me sitting my exam, I was calm and focussed, I remembered a lot from all the maps in my head. I have learnt from the course that I am a visual learner, I didn’t know this beforehand. Thank you Marilyn this is totally inspiring. This should be promoted more in schools and Adult learning. Makes me want to do more of your courses. Thank you for this opportunity. xx  And Yes happy for you to put my name to it. Thank you. Sieta Xx”

Sieta hasn’t got dyslexia or dyspraxia, this was just a case of failing an exam and wanting to have better tool, skills and strategies to pass the resit a few weeks later.
