This is Part 2 of my day with the Dalai Lama. What follows may not be grammatically correct because I have left the words as they were spoken so that you get more of the Dalai Lama’s personality and vibe.
I have split it into several parts because the original notes run to some 3,700 words and 7 pages!
Part 1 is about how to get inner peace, how you can overcome difficulties in life, and what you can do to lift your spirits. To read Part 1 click here.
QUESTION: RELATIONSHIPS – WE KNOW FROM SCIENCE THAT HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS ARE EXTRAORDINARILY IMPORTANT TO OUR HAPPINESS BUT SO OFTEN RELATIONSHIPS ARE POISONED BY DESTRUCTIVE EMOTIONS SO HOW CAN WE HAVE HAPPIER RELATIONSHIPS AND AVOID THIS POLLUTION FROM DESTRUCTIVE EMOTIONS?
Basically social awareness. There are certain social attitudes that link together, that’s love, forgiveness, and compassion, they link together. I think we created ‘their country’ and ‘my country’ and ‘we’ and ‘they’ and today we need entire 7 billion human beings to develop the wellbeing of the whole reality. Not looking for differences of ‘this nation or that nation’, the reality is you need a sense of global responsibility so therefore I think violence and war is over my nation and my country. That reality is about destroying your enemy so that reality leads to war which in some instance is mobilised and legalised violence, killing human beings by human beings. Unthinkable.
Now is no longer that reality but I think most of these problems we are facing is due to our own perception of we and they. So continuously holding onto that perception increases that reality and perception. The reality is that there is one small blue planet. In perception we carry too much stress of ‘we and they.’
I always admire the spirit of the European Union which is bringing together these different nations which isn’t just about their own sovereignty where common goals is more important than just national interests.
The maturity of the human race is to think ‘we, we, we’ so I think the spirit of the European Union must spread. I think Africa should follow the example of the European Union; the Union of Africa, and Asia also. We should think with a sense of universal responsibility.
QUESTION: CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU CALL SECULAR ETHICS? I THINK WHAT YOU MEAN BY IT IS THAT THE WAY WE BEHAVE TOWARDS EACH OTHER SHOULD BE BASED ON HUMAN NEEDS AND THEY DON’T REQUIRE A RELIGIOUS JUSTIFICATION, EVEN THOUGH OF COURSE MANY RELIGIONS COME UP WITH THE SAME PRINCIPLES. SO IN THE WEST WE’RE IN A FAIRLY NON-RELIGIOUS SOCIETY HERE, AND THIS IS ONE REASON WE FOUNDED ACTION FOR HAPPINESS, BECAUSE WE REALLY NEED A MOVMENT TO STAND FOR THESE ETHICAL VALUES AND HELP PEOPLE TO LEAD BETTER LIVES THAN THEY CAN ON THEIR OWN AND TO FORM IN GROUPS HELPING PEOPLE TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER IN LIVING WELL. YOU’VE HEARD SOME OF WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO SO WE’D LOVE TO HEAR HOW YOU THINK A MOVEMENT LIKE OURS CAN REPRESENT SECULAR ETHICS AND WHETHER WE’RE DOING IT THE RIGHT WAY?
Any moral principle, or any practice of love and compassion, out of 7 billion, there are 1 billion non-believers and some half-hearted believers, they believe when they are happy, in church, they have very good smiles, then when they leave and face some problems as human beings, then no longer they believe, and the holy spirit no longer there.
One time in Mexico I went to a catholic college and they invited me to talk, then I mentioned that some religious people are only holy person when dressed. When they take off the long dress, no longer a holy person. So next morning one old Bishop came to see me and he very much appreciated my comments.
If people had some agreement about the values of kindness and love and compassion and tolerance, it would be wonderful. At the same time non believer could carry it also. Whether believer or non-believer, we all come from mother, we all have the same seed, we all need protection and affection from our family, so from the social element, family or friend is very important to develop genuine friends or friendships entirely based on trust. Based on honesty.
If you remain distant from others, sometimes necessary to artificial smile, but that does not bring trust. And without trust, how can there be friendship? So the mental system of the mind, show your sense of concern, then trust comes. You can’t do for one day or one week, it has to be for months and years and then trust comes and then a friendship comes. Sometimes we tell a little bit of lies out of fear, fear for our future. I told a little bit of lies to my teacher. Nine years I was from communist China so I had to tell some lies! In 59, after I came from India I was telling them, March 1959 I left and I liberated and tell a little lie but since then I’m honest, truthful, but that gave me insight.
Part 3 examines the mix of western science with spirituality, one of the subjects I have been studying with the whole new field of NeuroSuccess, and blending neuroscience, spirituality, and personal development.
