The Ink Pen That Helped Me Write a New Future
I saw this on Dawn Petherick‘s facebook page. As you will see in a moment, the picture below was the first thing that struck me, followed by the words.
I was sharing with my business partner Sukhi Wahiwala and his lovely wife Parvinder Kaur Wahiwala this week the story of my History Teacher Mrs Turner.
She was handing out brand new ink cartridge pens to the entire class. Probably an old fashioned idea now, but these were the pen that used an ink cartridge and refilled from a jar of ink. Mrs Turner went to hand a pen to me and then withdrew it saying: “Oh you won’t be able to write with a real ink pen because you are left handed.”
It was one of those small but defining moments in life which could have gone either way. I remember feeling embarrassed as everyone turned to look at me to hear why, unlike everyone else, I wasn’t worthy of issuing a pen to.
The pens were a grass green colour with a bright silver nib. My friends and classmates sitting around me were already popping the tops off the pens and squealing with excitement.
I really didn’t have much confidence as a child, but on that ocassion I decided to insist upon having one, the same as everyone else and I asked that she also give me a new ink pen.
I didn’t always have that determination as a child however, it must have at least planted the seed for later life about not being defined or confined by the thoughts, beliefs, or opinions of others.
It has been one of those memories that endured because I could have very easily become someone who, at best, believed they couldn’t write with an ink pen because they were left handed, and at worst someone who believed that they weren’t as good or as worthy as everyone else.
Unfortunately the ‘at worst’ was true for me right up until the age of 32. It wasn’t until I stumbled into a personal development class, desperate for some kind of change, that I discovered that the beliefs that governed my life was I’m not good enough, I’m not worthy.
I don’t think that this was one of the issues that contributed to that, it was always more a reminder to myself that someone elses opinion should not be the blueprint by which I run my life.
My work and passion is working with people who want to change and transform their mindset, live, career, or finances, so it may have on some level contributed to that also.
Now back to Mrs Turner and the pen scenario, who do you think got a gold star for the best handwriting . . . . . . . . . .
