Be Inspired by Life Itself

Inspirations from Life by Marilyn Devonish

I just found myself thinking, as I made my customary fresh hot lemon and cinnamon drink to start the day that life inspires me.  Not just the things that you would put in to the ‘good or happy’ category, but also the seemingly bad.  Little things spark my thinking, creativity and curiosity, and inspire me on to bigger and more impactful thoughts, or stop me and cause me to reflect on the seemingly small yet powerful things that shape and make up this tapestry that we call life.

If life gives you lemons be sure to add some sugar and squeeze out every last drop!
If life gives you lemons be sure to add some sugar and squeeze out every last drop!

If you’re thinking ‘So Marilyn, what do you mean?  Give me an example’ today for instance; I was inspired by my blunt kitchen knife as it first dented rather than cut through the lemon.  It made me realise that life is so much easier if you have the right tools for the job.  And not just that, if even if you have the right tools, you’ve got to keep them sharp and on point.

“Keep yourself sharp and on point”

People often ask why, with all of the Trainers Training Certifications I have, I still bother to attend workshops and training courses, surely running so many myself must be enough?  No, I think my blunt knife is partly the reason.  Just because you have moved through the levels of whatever your field or profession is, I don’t believe that you then go ‘right, I’ve made it, time to rest on my laurels and act like I know forever.’

Now don’t get me wrong, training to keep you sharp is very different to course junkie mode, something which I suffered from a few years back!  I’m also talking about reading in and around your field, keeping up to date with the latest findings and research, listening to your customer or clients and seeing how they themselves are pushing the boundaries of your work.

Life lessons from a kettle

And then there was the inspiration from the kettle.  As I flicked the switch and went to walk off I noticed that the little red light hadn’t come on.  My first thought was, ‘ah well, I’ve had it for well over 15 years so maybe it has given up the ghost.’  I then lifted the kettle and put it back on the flatbed panel again.  Flicked the switch, it came on first time.  It reminded me that in order to work you have to be in alignment.  If you’re off centre, or not grounded firmly enough, that spark or connection won’t be made.  You can sit there and take up space but you won’t truly shine or come alive.  Without that spark and connection you won’t truly fulfil your purpose and do what you are on this earth to do.  For my kettle that is to boil water, for me it is to inspire and work with people to change and transform their mindset or thinking so that they can absolutely be the best that they were born to be.

What is it for you?

What is it that when your spark is lit and you are truly in alignment that you were born to do?  (Craig David, Born To Do It is now playing in my head!)

The passing of a friend . . . . . .

And then there was my friend John Wigham passing away yesterday.  When I initially read the post on facebook I didn’t feel like much of a friend.  I thought about him 4 days ago, wondered how he was doing, yet didn’t stop for a moment in my speaking schedule to pick up the phone and check in.  I was inspired by his death to remember that we often inspire people not just by what we do or say, but by just being who we are.  John was a playful joyful bundle of infectious fun energy.  Even though he was 20 years older than me, his energy at first used to tire me out a little because I was much more uptight and reserved back then.

As I write this post I sit here smiling because my infectious (and some might think overwhelming energy) is one of the things that people often comment on when they first meet me.  I had the pleasure of spending 4 weeks with John because we were both Teachers at the Skyros Resort in Greece.  John was teaching windsurfing and I was running Relationship Workshops and Life Coaching Sessions.  That was well over 10 years ago now, but to this day I have a picture from John’s windsurfing class that I use in my PhotoReading Workshop as an example to keep going and stay with it even though in the beginning you might feel like you’re not getting it.

Below is a photograph that I took of one of  John’s windsurfing students:

On PhotoReading we talk about NOPS which includes 'Staying with it' and I always use the story behind this picture as an example.

I think I might add to this post over the coming days, however, I think you get the drift when I say that I am inspired by life.

So I invite you, as you go about your day today to take a moment to be inspired by even the small things in life.  As they say, from little acorns big trees do grow!

  1. Thank you for the inspirational blog. I enjoyed this and its so true… With the chaos of our lifestyles we forget to look at the smaller things and events that are important and making time for family & friends. I also feel the need in updating my skills and keeping on top with new techniques etc & life’s learning is continuous. Sometimes is great when you have this fabulous thought that sparks ideas or a ‘flash bulb’ moment and the feel good factor. Take time to breathe in and exhale and make rituals to keep in contact with those that impact on your life. I enjoy the enthusiasm, Marilyn and it outlines the passion that you have in your work! So awesome!

    • Hi Alexa, thank you. You are right, the world in general can be a chaotic place, and it is so very easy to overlook the small yet very important things in life. I actually have a florescent light bulb in a perspex case that I take along to all of my PhotoReading Workshops because those ‘flash bulb’ moments have on many occasions changed the course of my life. Thank You for sharing! Marilyn xxx

  2. Dear Marilyn,

Thank you for the post which was well needed. This morning I felt a little frustrated about things not moving fast enough for me in my business. So, after undertaking a reading and research activity on the internet, I fortunately learned more and subscribed, for all the right reasons, to yet another most needed association related to my line of business that the HRH the Prince of Wales is a patron of.

Then, I thought I’d check-in to Linkedin to see if there were any further readings that would progress me and my company and enthusiastically read your post. Your statements, or should I say, good advice, that ”hit the nail (hard) on its head” that resonated with me were namely:

“Without that spark and connection you won’t truly fulfil your purpose and do what you are on this earth to do” from Life Lessons from a Kettle.

    And,

“…… to keep going and stay with it even though in the beginning you might feel like you’re not getting it.” from The passing of a friend ….

The photo of the water and greenery looks fabulous and I was taken away, dreaming about being in beautiful surroundings and read in my mind what steps I would need to take when I looked at the man working and applying concentration keeping his craft steady in the water to prevent sinking.

You are right, in that well know phrase, “from little acorns do big trees grow!” a sentiment my next door neighbour had recently uttered to encouragingly.

I will continue to take the little steps that will lead to positive growth.

    Delores

    • Hi Delores, wow, thank you. Inspiring for me to know that it has added a spark of inspiration and food for thought to your day! Marilyn xxx 🙂
