What Does It Take To Become An Expert In Your Field? Some of the Answers Are Probably Sat Right In Front of You

Can you imagine the knowledge that comes from reading a book a week, every week, for 17 years?  That’s a whopping 850 books in that timeframe if you have a couple of weeks off each year for Christmas!

For many people I am sure that is a daunting task.  Number 1, would you have the time or mental discipline for such an endeavour?

Number 2, if you did it, would you be able to retain, remember and recall that information for application and utilisation in your life, business, or area of expertise?

To gauge that, look at the amount of reading time you’ve had or been able to create, and the number of books you’ve read in the past month, 3 months, and 6 months.   Also do a review of how much you remember or have implemented since then.

Well I have just seen the result of that ‘book a week for 17 years’ in action at the Brendon Burchard Experts Academy.  This man was a powerhouse of knowledge, ideas and innovation.  Hearing him share his story of how he got to be an expert in his field reminded me to be thankful that I have the ability to PhotoRead and therefore absorb information from books in record time.  (We start with PhotoReading at 25,000 words per minute and PhotoReading an entire book in about 5 minutes . . . . . .)

In the coming weeks I’m going to be reading all about neuroscience and neuroplasticity, and focusing on practical ideas about how I translate that to be of benefit to both my PhotoReading™ coaching clients and delegates, and also my new TranceFormation™ Programme clients.  (I’ve even managed to organise a weekly discussion with a Doctor and trainee Neurosurgeon (thank you Dr C), so I am very excited about what is to come!)

Because I’m always playing with books I don’t feel the need to set up a rigid ‘one book a week’ rule.  I will however maybe go with delving more deeply into 10 or so topics or areas this year.

“Engage your brain for optimum learning.”

If I were to leave you with one tip to getting started, that would be to read with Purpose.  Having a clear Purpose focuses the mind, and wakes up the part of the brain known as the Reticular Activating System, which is said to be responsible for regulating arousal.   I often describe it as a magnet or heat seeking device, which once given clear instructions about what you are looking for or desire, will set about locating it for you.  (The old ‘don’t think of a blue tree’ gag).

Wake up your Reticular Activating System to help you magnetise information and knowledge.

When you have a clear sense of Purpose you can navigate your way through information much more quickly and efficiently.  It also has the benefit of having the mind automatically see both consciously and unconsciously the information that you are looking for.

Having a clear and sharp Purpose, combined with PhotoReading the entire book in 5 minutes kicks off a chain of neurological connections and events which is nothing short of mind blowing.

“Are you up for increasing your reading quotient?”

If you were to choose a book this month, what would it be?

Once you have chosen your book, start with a few basic questions:

  • What is my Purpose?
  • What do I want to know, learn, or take away from this book?
  • How will I know when I have achieved my Purpose?

There are 6 key questions that we go through on the PhotoReading Workshop however these will suffice to help get that neurological ball rolling.

Do post your comments below as I’d love to hear more about what you would choose to read about or become more knowledgeable at.
