The Curse & Blessing of Age & Ageing

The subject of ageing has come up a few times in the last couple of weeks.  The ‘oh my how time is flying‘ through to the things that have and haven’t been done yet in life.

“If you live long enough, the years will pass for us all”

Stop watch
The passing of time

I was starkly reminded of this fact at a family gathering over the Christmas weekend as I watched someone who was fit and healthy when I last saw them literally crawl up some stairs, almost on their hands and knees.

It was a startling, humbling, slightly scary, unexpected, and gratitude filled moment.

Startling, humbling and scary because I was taken aback by what I saw, the lack of strength in the once vibrant body.  It was gratitude filled because I immediately realised that they were still here, when many of the ‘Christmas gang’ from back in the day were no longer with us.

Someone came up to talk to me at that moment and I kind of didn’t hear them.  They looked puzzled and asked me if I was OK to which I simultaneously said yes and no.

“Take the Nike approach!”

Nike Just Do It
Nike Just Do It

When I am teaching my PhotoReading™ Classes delegates will inevitably ask how often they should practice their PhotoReading skills.  For the past 11+ years my answer has always been the same: “Don’t practice, just take the Nike approach and Just Do It.”  Don’t wait for the perfect time to PhotoRead, don’t wait for the perfect conditions, don’t wait until you feel like you know it all and have all of your ducks lined up in a row.  Just do it.

I say the same when it comes to life.  I say whatever your ‘it‘ is, do it while you can.

Do it while you have the energy.

Do it while you have the time.

Do it while you have the physical, emotional, or mental freedom to do it.

Your life will most likely be long and healthy and I hope that it will be.  I also have the belief that I am going to be fit and healthy and physically and mentally agile forever (well at least to the age of 110 or more) and, I was reminded in that moment as I watched the relative climb up the stairs that some opportunities are best seized and taken when you have youth and vitality and energy on your side.

“Are you waiting because of fear or uncertainty?”

This post was partly inspired by seeing the quote below posted by a friend on facebook:

Waiting and getting older
“If you wait, all that happens is that you get older.” MARIO ANDRETTI
Fear
Is fear, uncertainty or doubt holding you back?

I am thinking that waiting because of fear, that waiting because of uncertainly, that waiting because it doesn’t exactly fit your plan, that waiting because you don’t know exactly how it will all pan out is 4 wait’s too many.

There are of course times when you plan, times where you lay the foundations and do the groundwork, and most people if they are honest with themselves know the difference between planning and unnecessarily waiting.

The decision as always is yours.  I simply remind you in this short blog post that whether you do it now or not, the time will pass anyway.

ADDITION TO THE ORIGINAL POST

As I was scrolling through facebook the next day I came across the photograph below from Yamuna:

The text accompanying the photograph read; “Accepting the body to deteriorate as we age is wrong thinking.”  That was also a reminder that I would do well to re-adjust my thoughts back to the default setting of being fit, healthy and well right into my 110 years!
